Finally, We're Making Progress

I was somewhat pleased with the result of my box frame on Wednesday. I mostly like it because of the ideas generated following the outcome. I was thinking of perhaps making a bigger frame with multiple layers of transparent sheets. Perhaps this could convey a sequence of emotions.

Visceral Visage

These images reflect on an inward feeling express outwardly by such a mysterious gaze. I do aim to get a similar effective persona in my own work. I will also use color as much as grayscale.

Furthermore

I have done a couple of test prints to evaluate the linoleum carving so far. The result was adequate, but I plan to take some more age off of the face and leave more negative space for another layer to show through. I am also thinking about partaking in the animation tutorial, whenever that may occur.

Printmaking Continued

The printmaking process is progressing nicely. I look forward to mixing colors as suggested. Today, I have finished carving my linoleum and plan to test it out on Wednesday. I may pre-make some drawings on which to print that morning.

Printmaking

I think that it would be useful for me to incorporate my ideas of masks and emotions in the printmaking process. If I can get several printed, perhaps in various colors, and lay some other image or visage above or below the first image, it will suit the motif. Using the ghosts could also produce some interesting images as well as manipulating the water-based ink with applications of water to smear or fade an image.

It's All In the Eyes

Joker by Dave McKean
Red Skull concept by unknown
I have always admired the McKean piece. The color choice, as well as the three dimensional effect make it evermore leering and intimidating. It inspires me to take advantage of unsettling expressions and utilize the effect of color in my thematic series.
The second image is one I recently discovered. I also like this expression and color choice.

Continuing the Thought

I think that incorporating imagery that represents words or concepts that irritate or disgruntle the viewer will support the aforementioned concept. I am also considering "hiding" words in the picture to keep the viewer attached to the piece. Anything that can keep the viewer occupied for as long as possible, while challenging him with an unsettling image is continuously pondered. Images are still being browsed and formulated.

Ideas Are Flowing

I cannot find the appropriate pictures to best illustrate my ideas yet, but will make some sketches to get them on paper. Layering and the manipulation of color to evoke an uneasy feeling from the viewer has peaked my interest. Using transparent sheets may help to add another layer that should not impede on others. Colors such as green, orange, and maybe violet will likely show in upcoming pieces. There is also a good chance that the embodiment of emotion will serve as an occasional motif.

Out With a Bang

Protectors of the Universe by Alex Ross
One of my goals this year is a large scale piece that is rather busy and challenges my abilities with perspectives of the atmosphere and figure. Ross is an inspiration to me for his composition and narrative. I am considering doing something rather involved with some characters and creatures of my own making.

Portrait Expansion

I have an idea inspired by Rockwell's portraiture to either draw or paint various images of friends and me on the same page. Of course, I would use my own style, but maintain most of the realism. The pieces would likely be more theatrical and dramatic in nature.

The Master of Time

The Master of Time; mono type print; 2008
I have considered the possibility of incorporating the complexity of time as a motif or series for the focus in part of my portfolio. In this series, time would be outlined with images mostly characterized by the figure above, developed a few years ago. The eyes (future/past) are unseen, torso (present) is strong, and limbs unravel (past, future). The medium is undecided, though acrylic, watercolor, and ink (print-making) have been considered.
